Chosen, Called, Cherished
Life has a way of making us question who we are. The rejection stings. The failure whispers lies about our value. The comparison game tells us we don't measure up. And somewhere along the way, we start believing that our worth is tied to our performance, our appearance, our achievements, or other people's opinions of us.
But that's not what God says. Not even close.
You Are Chosen
Before you did anything right or wrong, before you achieved a single accomplishment, before you earned anyone's approval, God chose you. Not because of what you could offer Him, but simply because He wanted you.
Ephesians 1:4 tells us, "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight." Read that again slowly. Before the creation of the world. Before time began. Before you took your first breath. God looked ahead through all of history and said, "I choose that one. She's Mine."
This isn't about what you've done or what you will do. This is about God's sovereign choice to set His love on you. And nothing can change that choice. Not your mistakes. Not your past. Not your doubts or fears or failures. His choice stands firm because it's based on His character, not yours.
Think about what this means practically. When you feel rejected by people, remember you're chosen by God. When you feel overlooked or undervalued, remember that the Creator of the universe has personally selected you to be His own. When the enemy whispers that you're not good enough, remind him that God's choice doesn't depend on your goodness but on His grace.
You Are Called
Being chosen is wonderful, but God didn't stop there. He didn't just pick you out and leave you wondering what comes next. He called you. He has a specific purpose for your life, a unique assignment that only you can fulfill.
Second Timothy 1:9 says, "He has saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace." Notice that order: saved and called. Salvation isn't the end of the story. It's the beginning. God saved you for a reason. He has plans for you. He has work prepared in advance for you to do (Ephesians 2:10).
Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "I don't feel called. I don't have some dramatic story or clear direction. I'm just living my ordinary life." But here's the truth: your calling might not look like what you expect. It might not be flashy or public or impressive by the world's standards.
Your calling might be to raise godly children in a broken world. To show kindness in a workplace that values cutthroat competition. To be faithful in small things that no one else notices. To pray for others when you could be pursuing your own agenda. To stand firm in truth when everyone around you is compromising.
God's call on your life is both general and specific. Generally, He's called all believers to love Him, love others, and make disciples. Specifically, He's placed you in certain relationships, certain situations, certain moments where your unique gifts, experiences, and personality can make an eternal difference.
Don't despise the calling just because it doesn't look like someone else's. Don't dismiss your purpose just because it seems ordinary. God wastes nothing. Every season, every struggle, every experience is preparing you for what He's called you to do.
You Are Cherished
This is the one that's hardest for many of us to accept. We can understand being chosen in some theological sense. We can grasp that God has work for us to do. But cherished? That feels too personal, too intimate, too good to be true.
Yet that's exactly what Scripture tells us. Zephaniah 3:17 paints this beautiful picture: "The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing."
God delights in you. He rejoices over you. He sings over you. Not over what you do for Him, but over who you are to Him. You are His beloved daughter, and His heart is filled with affection for you.
We serve a God who knows the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7). Who collects your tears in a bottle (Psalm 56:8). Who thinks about you constantly (Psalm 139:17-18). Who gave up His only Son so that you could be in relationship with Him forever (John 3:16).
This is not distant, detached approval. This is deep, personal, passionate love. The kind of love that pursues. The kind that sacrifices. The kind that never gives up, never lets go, never stops cherishing its object.
When Identity Gets Confused
The problem is that we live in a world that constantly tries to redefine our identity. Culture tells us we're what we accomplish. Social media tells us we're what others think of us. The enemy tells us we're our worst mistakes and deepest failures.
And if we're not careful, we start building our identity on these shaky foundations. We base our worth on job titles, relationship status, bank account balances, or the approval of people who don't even know us.
Then when those things shift (and they will), our whole sense of self crumbles. We feel worthless when we lose the job. We feel insignificant when the relationship ends. We feel like failures when we don't meet our own expectations.
But God offers us an identity that can't be shaken. An identity based on who He is, not who we are. An identity rooted in His unchanging love, not our changing circumstances.
First John 3:1 says, "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" That's your identity. Child of God. Chosen. Called. Cherished. That's who you are at your core, and nothing can change it.
Living From Your Identity
When you really grasp your identity in Christ, everything changes. The way you handle rejection. The way you respond to criticism. The way you make decisions. The way you treat yourself.
If you know you're chosen, you don't have to perform for acceptance. If you know you're called, you don't have to compare yourself to others or compete for position. If you know you're cherished, you don't have to settle for relationships or situations that devalue you.
Living from your identity means making choices based on who God says you are, not based on how you feel or what others think. It means speaking to yourself the way God speaks to you. It means rejecting lies that contradict your identity in Christ.
When thoughts come that say you're worthless, you counter them with truth: "I am chosen by God." When temptations come that promise to fill the void in your heart, you remember: "I am cherished by the Creator of the universe; nothing else can satisfy me like He does." When confusion comes about what you should do with your life, you return to this: "I am called with a holy calling, and God will make my purpose clear."
The Enemy's Strategy
Understand this: the enemy's primary strategy is to make you forget who you are. He knows that if he can get you confused about your identity, he can control your behavior. If he can make you believe you're unloved, you'll search for love in all the wrong places. If he can make you believe you're purposeless, you'll waste your life on things that don't matter.
That's why he works so hard to remind you of your past, your failures, your inadequacies. He wants you focused on what you've done instead of on what Christ has done for you. He wants you looking at yourself instead of looking at your Savior.
But you don't have to listen. You don't have to agree with his lies. You can take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and compare it to what God says. And when the two don't match, you know which one to believe.
Walking in Your Worth
Romans 12:3 tells us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought, but also not to think of ourselves less highly than we ought. We're called to have accurate self-assessment based on truth, not false humility based on insecurity.
True humility isn't thinking less of yourself. It's thinking of yourself less because you're thinking of God more. It's recognizing that your value comes from Him, not from you, and being grateful for the identity He's given you.
This means you don't have to brag about yourself or prove yourself to anyone. You also don't have to put yourself down or dismiss your God-given gifts and calling. You can simply rest in the truth that you are exactly who God says you are.
Walk with confidence (not arrogance). Speak with authority (not pride). Serve with purpose (not performance). Love with freedom (not fear). All because you know who you are.
Remembering Daily
Your identity in Christ isn't something you achieve. It's something you receive and then remember. Every single day, you need to remind yourself of the truth.
Start your morning by declaring it out loud: "I am chosen by God. I am called to His purposes. I am cherished by Him." Let that truth settle into your heart before you face the day's challenges.
When circumstances threaten to shake you, come back to your identity. When people's opinions threaten to define you, come back to your identity. When your own thoughts condemn you, come back to your identity.
You are not who your past says you are. You are not who your failures say you are. You are not even who your successes say you are. You are who God says you are.
The Truth That Sets You Free
Jesus said in John 8:32, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." The truth about your identity in Christ is meant to set you free. Free from the need to prove yourself. Free from the fear of rejection. Free from the burden of trying to earn what's already been given.
So believe it. Receive it. Live from it. Let the truth of being chosen, called, and cherished transform the way you see yourself and the way you live your life.
Because you're not just anybody. You're His. And that changes everything.
